Trekking in the Himalayas, whether Kanchenjunga from Darjeeling, India; to Everest Base Camp, Langtang Valley or the Annapurna Loop in Nepal has been one of the enduring highlights of my life. I was fortunate to first visit Nepal on an epic solo bicycle tour in 1985/86 and experience the splendour and joys of trekking solo and with a companion. Until I became disabled later in life, I never needed help from a local guide or porter but these days I am very glad of their help and commitment to my health and safety. I hope I will get another opportunity to visit this region of the world again post-Covid. I have seen many changes in Nepal over the years and there is a sense of sadness over many of these markers of progress that have resulted in a deteriorating natural environment. Nevertheless, there is still a sense of magic about this Himalayan Kingdom and its diverse people and I am glad to still have legs that can put one foot in front of the other, even if a tad slower and needing a walking aid.
